Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture, especially in the U.S. At Bout Time Pub & Grub, we’re dedicated to honoring that spirit with tacos, margaritas, and a variety of great food, cold beer, and a festive atmosphere that brings people together.
So let’s raise a glass—preferably filled with tequila—and dive into the history and traditions of Cinco de Mayo, and what we’re pouring this year at Bout Time.
What is Cinco de Mayo?
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day (that’s in September). Instead, it commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when a vastly outnumbered Mexican army defeated French forces, uplifting Mexican morale and national pride.
It’s a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla with parades, speeches, and reenactments of the 1862 battle. Yet the date has taken on a life of its own in the U.S. since the 1960s, when Mexican beer and other products began to be marketed here. It’s become a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride—marked with parades, music, dancing, traditional food, and, of course, a good drink or two.
Tequila: The Star of the Show
This year, consider what you’re choosing to sip. Small-batch tequilas are handcrafted using traditional methods, high-quality agave, and a focus on purity and flavor. They’re smooth, complex, and perfect for both sipping and mixing.
Here are a few tequila insights:
Blanco tequila is unaged and characterized by a bright, clean agave flavor. It’s great for refreshing margaritas or tequila sodas.
Reposado is aged in oak barrels for a few months, resulting in a smooth and slightly oaky flavor—perfect for sipping or in a smoked margarita.
Añejo & extra añejo are aged even longer, meaning these tequilas will taste rich and caramel-kissed. They are often compared to fine whiskeys and are ideal for sipping neat.
Infused and flavored tequilas are getting creative with natural infusions, such as jalapeño, hibiscus, or citrus. They’re ideal for spicy margaritas or something a little different.
