July 24th in Utah is Pioneer Day—the state holiday that marks the date Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake valley in 1847. It’s a holiday more widely celebrated than the 4th of July in Utah, including hundreds of thousands of people attending the Days of ’47 Parade.
However, the date also marks one of the state’s most beloved unofficial traditions: Pie and Beer Day. While the rest of the state may be lighting fireworks, cooking Dutch oven meals, and honoring the pioneers, many locals prefer to gather with friends, enjoy a cold pint, and slice into some flaky, round-shaped sweet or savory goodness.
