New Year, New Law: What Guests Need to Know Before Ordering a Drink

A new Utah alcohol law will take effect this January, requiring mandatory ID scanning at restaurants and bars statewide for every alcohol purchase. This includes at Bout Time Pub & Grub, so before your next stop in, we wanted to break down what guests can expect. And don’t worry, you’ll still enjoy the same game day vibes and refreshing drinks you’ve come to know and love.

HB 437 requires all IDs to be scanned so the system can determine whether an ID is restricted from alcohol sales. All guests ordering alcohol must present a valid U.S. Driver’s License, state ID, passport or military ID, to scan at the time of purchase, regardless of age or appearance. (Yes, even if you’ve had your ID scanned thousands of times.)

In compliance with this legislation, all Utah Bout Time Pub & Grub locations will electronically scan the ID of every guest purchasing an alcoholic beverage without exception.

“This is a statewide requirement, and we are committed to following the law while continuing to provide the great experience our guests expect,” said Dan Eckersley, Director at Bout Time Pub & Grub. “We appreciate our guests’ patience and cooperation as we implement this new process. Our goal is to keep service efficient while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere Bout Time is known for.”

Guests are encouraged to have their valid ID ready when ordering alcoholic beverages to help ensure smooth and efficient service. The ID scan is a brief step during the ordering process and does not change Bout Time Pub & Grub’s commitment to quick and friendly service.

Tried-and-true classics are fan favorites for a reason, and the Original Chubby Melt™ is no exception. We start with a juicy ground chuck beef patty hand-formed to ensure maximum flavor in every bite. Then we add melted cheese, grilled onions, and Thousand Island dressing, all delivered between two Parmesan-crusted grilled cheese sandwiches. It’s a hearty meal that will keep you going through an entire day of gridiron action.

Wings for the Win

No shocker here: wings remain untouchable. Spicy, sweet, crispy, saucy, however you like them, our wings are a menu staple and an event of their own. Pick your style (extra crispy, savory smoked, or boneless), then sauce them the way you like them. They’re wings your way, and the choices are mouthwatering.

If there were a league for brunch, ours would be the defending champs. With college and NFL football dominating the weekends much of the year, we fire up the kitchen early so fans can fuel up before kickoffs. July 24th in Utah is Pioneer Day—the state holiday that marks the date Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake valley in 1847. It’s a holiday more widely celebrated than the 4th of July in Utah, including hundreds of thousands of people attending the Days of ’47 Parade.

However, the date also marks one of the state’s most beloved unofficial traditions: Pie and Beer Day. St. Patrick’s Day, celebrated every year on March 17, has become a global celebration of Irish heritage, complete with parades, revelry, and a fair share of whiskey drinking. Whether you’re catching a game, want to feel like you’re Irish for a day, or just love scratch-made food, we’ve got everything you need for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration that will leave everyone else green with envy. 

Food That Hits the Spot 

When it comes to fueling the festivities, our kitchen is serving up some mouthwatering meals that pay homage to Irish flavors. The History of Whiskey and St. Patrick’s Day

To understand why whiskey and St. Patrick’s Day go hand in hand, one must first appreciate the long-standing relationship between Ireland and its national spirit. Whiskey, meaning “water of life” in Gaelic, has been distilled in Ireland for centuries, with records dating back as early as 1405. 

By the 17th and 18th centuries, whiskey had become an essential part of Irish life, enjoyed by both the working class and the aristocracy, which then carried on in large Irish communities in cities like Boston, New York, and Chicago. Their St. Patrick’s Day events included plenty of Irish music, dancing, and, of course, whiskey drinking to celebrate their heritage.
